ABOUT MAUD LEWIS
Maud Lewis (1903-1970) is one of Atlantic Canada’s most well-known artists and one of Canada’s most significant artists of the mid-twentieth century. She created colourful, graphically bold interpretations of the Nova Scotia landscape.
Lewis was born in 1903 in Yarmouth, NS, moved in the 1930s to Digby County, NS. She had a prolific and consistent painting career throughout the 1950s and 1960s. A collection of her work is on permanent view at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
Lewis and her work have been the subject of numerous books, documentaries, and national and international touring exhibitions.
OUR BACKGROUND

There are themes or motifs that reoccur in Lewis’ work - the team of oxen are sometimes the main subject in her paintings; here they appear in the lower left pulling a red sleigh. A yellow covered bridge is the focus of this painting - an exposed area of white paint conveys a sense of snow accumulating on the roof. A few quick blue lines give depth to the painting, connecting the middle ground with the foreground, and also a sense time passing as we know another sleigh has gone before this one.

Spring Art Auction | Lot 105: Blacksmith Shop
oil on board, 12.25 x 17 in. (unframed dimensions), c. 1960s
Provenance: Private Collection, New Brunswick
This scene is a recurrent theme in the artist’s work. There is clarity and cohesion to the component parts of this painting: the horse tethered to a post in the centre of the composition has been unhitched from the black carriage on the right and awaits the work of the blacksmith in the upper left. Fields of green grass and white flowers and a leafy tree frame these components and draw our eye back to the centre of the composition.
