Auction Highlight: Kent Monkman

Kent Monkman - Emergence of a Legend

This auction features Emergence of a Legend, a series of five studio portraits by Cree artist, Kent Monkman.

In these faux daguerrotypes, Monkman appears as his alter ego, Miss Chief Eagle Testickle. Miss Chief is portrayed in various guises - a hunter, a vaudeville performer, a trapper’s bride - as if appearing in one of George Catlin’s 19th-century tableaux vivants or travelling exhibitions. Monkman though, in this trickster form, subverts/inverts expectations and stereotypical images of Indigenous peoples, challenging the colonial gaze.

Kent Monkman - Emergence of a Legend

Kent Monkman created 25 editions of the Emergence of a Legend series, one of which is in the National Gallery of Canada collection.

Monkman is one of Canada’s most important and critically acclaimed contemporary artists. Working across genres and media, Monkman’s practice has and continues to challenge received notions of Indigeneity and historical impacts of colonialism.

Monkman has had major exhibitions in Canada and the U.S. and was recently selected to create two monumental paintings for the Great Hall of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY.
